Internship with the UNDP Washington Office

The UNDP Washington office serves as the liaison between the UNDP New York Headquarters and the Washington community. The Washington office is a primary link connecting UNDP’s development work in 166 countries worldwide to the US Congress, State Department, USAID, World Bank, diplomatic community, media and general public.

UNDP Washington Web Developer/Communications Internship

UNDP is seeking an enthusiastic graduate student with excellent web skills for its Web Developer/ Communications Internship, to start with immediate effect. Under the supervision of the Communications Officer, the intern will provide support in the updating of and general maintenance of UNDP Washington Office website.

Duration:
This internship is for a period of three months with possible extension of up to six months.

Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide assistance to the Communications Officer in updating the UNDP Washington Office website (us.undp.org)
* Work with the Communications officer in the formulation and implementation of new media and web strategies
* Audio/Video recording and editing for webcasts
* Research materials from UNDP intranet and other sources for publication on the website
* Assist in other outreach related activities of the office

Required Skills and Experience
* Strong Dreamweaver and HTML knowledge
* Knowledge of PHP, CSS and/or XML
* Sound knowledge of video integration (including flash player plug-in integration with social media)
* Audio/Video recording and editing experience
* New Media skills (website integration and strategy)
* Web design experience
* Interest in international development

UNDP INTERNSHIPS - CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

A) UNDP will not pay for the internship and that all the expenses connected with it must be borne by applicant or his/her sponsoring institution;
B) UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during internship and that applicant must, therefore, provide proof of my enrollment in a health insurance plan, by return mail to this office, prior to arrival in Washington;
C) There is no expectation of employment at the end of internship;
D) UNDP does not deal with the immigration authorities of the United States of America and that, therefore, applicant must be responsible for obtaining any necessary visas;
Once accepted as an intern, the following additional conditions will apply:
E) Conduct must at all times be in a manner compatible with responsibilities as the holder of a UNDP internship;
F) Keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known to intern by the accepting office during the course of internship and not to publish any reports or papers on the basis of information obtained from the programme, except with authorization from UNDP;
G) Provide written notice in case of illness and other unavoidable circumstances which might prevent him/her from fulfilling obligations.

General Internship

Outstanding graduate-level students have the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNDP's work. Internships are designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of multilateral technical cooperation, but also complements other international studies, including law.

Interns are selected on a competitive basis. The following minimum qualifications are required:

  • Enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme in a development related field such as economics, public or business administration, or environmental studies. Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.
  • Demonstrated interest in the field of development.
  • Language skills: written and spoken proficiency in English.
  • An interest in global mobility; adaptability to varied physical and other environments; a desire to work with and gain the confidence and respect of people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the UNDP Statement of Purpose.
  • Candidates possessing Capitol Hill experience and having knowledge of congressional procedures are especially welcome.

Intern Tasks

  • Attending Congressional hearings and other public policy forums pertaining to UNDP, and briefing UNDP staff.
  • Monitoring the media and assembling daily press clips.
  • Receiving and responding to requests for UNDP's assistance and attention.
  • Planning and execution of UNDP-related events.
  • Updating existing media, think-tank and governmental databases.
  • Assisting UNDP staff with day to day operations.
