UNDP Supported Iraqi Outreach to Voters and Media
Surrounding Successful Elections

The recent vote for provincial elections in Iraq saw a healthy turnout, due in part to the successful media and voter outreach strategies of the Iraqi election authorities supported by UNDP. "An important part of Iraq´s preparation for the provincial elections was to let the voters know what their rights are and how and where the voting takes place," Paolo Lembo, UNDP´s country director for Iraq, said. Assessing Damage,
Preparing for Early Recovery



Three weeks of fighting in Gaza last December has taken a heavy economic, social and psychological toll on the lives of Palestinians living there, according to the findings of a survey commissioned by UNDP. The assessment will contribute to the Gaza Early Recovery and Reconstruction Plan, currently being drafted by the Palestinian Authority for the Gaza donors´ conference to be hosted in Cairo on March 2nd. Central Asia´s poorest countries find themselves particularly vulnerable to water, energy, and food insecurities.



UNDP´s new Central Asia Regional Risk Assessment discusses ways the governments of that region can prepare for and manage these threats.

The assessment, supported by USAID and DFID, lays out concrete actions that can be taken immediately to mitigate these compound crises.

Jordan Ryan Appointed to Head UNDP Crisis Prevention & Recovery

This month, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Jordan Ryan (USA) as Assistant Secretary-General, Assistant Administrator of UNDP and Director of the Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR). Ryan will replace Kathleen Cravero. MORE

UNDP in Bosnia: Helping with Huge War Crimes Trial Backlog

This month, UNDP and Bosnia launched a EUR 1-million project to help process approximately 10,000 war crimes cases in the next 15 years. The three-year project aims to strengthen the capacity of lower courts to prosecute war crimes cases by providing judges and prosecutors with specialized education and by developing witness support networks.
